Who is Sally Kirkland?

Sally Kirkland, BEST Actress Oscar Nominee, Golden Globe winner, Independent Spirit Award winner, LA Film Critics Circle Award winner and veteran of over 200 films. Feisty, hard-working, famously liberal, with the trademark blonde hair, actress Sally Kirkland has certainly made an indelible mark on Hollywood history.

Born in New York City, her mother was the fashion editor at Vogue and LIFE magazine. Sally began her career on the off-Broadway circuit and trained under 'Lee Strasberg'. Sally Kirkland is a film, TV, and theater veteran since the 1960's and is probably best known for the film "Anna," for which she garnered the Best Actress Oscar nomination and won the Best Actress Golden Globe, the Independent Spirit Award, and the LA Film Critic's Circle Award. Sally's first director in 1964 was Andy Warhol in "13 Most Beautiful Women." In 1968 she became the first nude actress in American history, "Sweet Eros" by Terrence McNally. Her 220 films also include: "The Sting," "The Way We Were," "Coming Apart," "Cold Feet," "Best of the Best," "Revenge," "JFK," "ED TV," "Bruce Almighty", "Coffee Date" and "Archaeology of a Woman".

Anyone who knows Sally Kirkland’s work as an actress will understand that she is a master of her craft in large part because of her profound and genuine compassion for people. But what may be surprising to those who only know the actress side of Sally is that she also has a deep and dynamic experience of her spiritual nature, and has spent the majority of her life in serious spiritual study. As she studied, she also began dedicated meditation, self-imposed dietary restrictions including fasting, extended periods of silence (mouna) and of celibacy (bramacharya), and voracious reading of a broad range of spiritual/ metaphysical/ religious teachings. She flirted with Buddhism and became a practicing Hindu. Ultimately she found an organization that integrated her Episcopalian/ Catholic/Christian upbringing with her Eastern spiritual/mystical practices. It presented an unusual approach to spirituality, synthesizing the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of living, and it brought the experience of Spirit alive in a practical way that Sally could apply to her everyday life. The organization, called The Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA), also ordains people as ministers.

In the past couple of years she has starred in "Buddy Solitaire", "Gnaw" and "The Most Hated Woman in America" co-starring with Melissa Leo and Peter Fonda. And coming out soon, she has starred in "Sarah Q", "Cuck", "Invincible" and "The Talking Tree". She was nominated for Best Actress in a TV movie by the Hollywood Foreign Press for "The Haunted- A True Story." Her television credits include: guest starring on "Criminal Minds," recurring on "Head Case" and "the Simple Life." She guest starred on "Resurrection Blvd," and in the TV movie, "Another Woman's Husband." Sally had a recurring role on "Felicity". She starred on the NBC movie, "Brave New World." She starred in the TV movie, "Song of Songs" and was a series regular on the TV show "Valley of the Dolls." She also starred in the TV movie, "The Woman Who Loved Elvis." She had a recurring role as Barbara Healy in the original "Roseanne" series. She starred in the TV movie, "Heatwave" and recurred as Tracy on "Days of Our Lives."

Sally is also an exhibited painter, poet, renowned acting coach and ordained minister in the Church of The Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA).

Take Time to Be Alone

Be patient with yourself.
It takes practice to perfect doing nothing-not that this work isn't native to your soul, only that so much of us is so busy trying to be something, we have become distracted and have forgotten being whole.

So, take time to be alone. Feel everything, but be no one. Dip yourself in this nothingness. Throw yourself in, and then listen to the sound of no bottom.

And do not fear such aloneness. What you call falling, is flying. . . once you let go of being afraid.

Once living within the limits of what is known is realized as being the limitation of your spiritual possibilities, then there is no recourse other than to depart the safety of all that you have been in favor of discovering all that you are yet to be.

New Year Resolutions for a Positive Life

1. I WILL MAKE FEAR MY FRIEND. I realize that any fear, including the fear of change, is the way we learn and grow. I will make fear my friend so I can experience growth experiences easier, flow with life better, spend less time in crisis and have time to develop positive choices.

2. I WILL GIVE UP CONTROL. I realize trying to control makes my goals rigid and inhibits me from getting what I want. I will let go of control to promote more positive energy and aid me actualizing what I want.

3. I WILL USE LOGIC WITH INTUTITION. I realize rationalization is when my heart and head can't come together and being too logical is based only on things I know - Both which limit my possibilities and growth. I will use logic to see the broader picture of what is good for all, let go of expectations, judgments and trust my intuition for balance and truth.

4. I WILL HAVE POSITIVE THOUGHTS. I realize negative thoughts contribute to negative feelings which result in negative actions. When I start to feel negative I will acknowledge I have the feeling, then let the negative feeling go by shifting my mind to concentrate on being grateful and joyful for what I have.

5. I WILL USE POSITIVE WORDS. I realize negative words contribute to negative thoughts and keep me in the negative. I will use positive words to keep the flow of positive energy coming towards me and others.

6. I WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND BE DECISIVE. I realize that indecision and not taking responsibility for my actions delays the benefit of change, detains life and growth experiences, erodes self-trust and self-confidence, and takes away my personal power. I will take responsibility for my actions and trust my intuition to help make decisions in a timely manner.

7. I WILL LIVE IN THE MOMENT. I realize that focusing on the past hinders my focus on what I want and creates disillusionment. Worrying about the future wastes needless energy. Both cultivate negative energy, delay action and stop awareness of positive opportunity. I know that all that is real is just in this moment.

8. I WILL USE DISCERNMENT AND GIVE UP THE NEED TO BE RIGHT. I realize that judgment comes only from my perspective and the insistence on being right is connected to ego. Both create a false sense of safety and independence; feed the ego, stops communication and my ability to make choices. Rather than judgment I will use discernment to see what is right for me and be open to new viewpoints, develop compassion and realize we are all one.

9. I WILL FLOW WITH LIFE, TRUST AND HAVE NO EXPECTATION. I realize rigid goals, expectations or set too much significance on outcomes actually sets a limit on the outcome. I also realize having doubts draws negative energy and takes away my personal power. I will open the door to limitless opportunities by flowing with life, maintaining hope and trust that everything is happening for my greatest good.

10. I WILL BE HAPPY AND JOYFUL. I realize that happiness does not rely on things and is a positive state of the heart and mind. I know and trust I will always get what I need and feel gratitude for what I have and will find the joy and happiness that is reflected in every situation.

11. I WILL BE SPIRITUALLY CONNECTED. I realize that there is a Higher Power and that I am loved and protected in every moment. I am also part of the whole and connected to every one and every thing, therefore I will be part of the solution to help eliminate fear, advance positive thought and encourage the concept that we are all one - here for the greater good of all.

Recipe of the Month

Angel Food Cake
Wheat (Gluten), Casein and White Sugar Free

Oven Temperature: 375° F
Baking Time: 35-40 min., 1-10" tube pan

1 cups wheat free flour blend
1/2 teaspoons of xantham gum
12 large egg whites (room temperature)
1 cup maple syrup
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon almond extract

Sift together flour blend and xantham gum. Using an electric mixer at high speed beat egg whites, cream of tartar salt, vanilla and almond extract until stiff and forms soft glossy peaks.
Continue beating as you slowly add maple syrup, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating after each addition. Sift 1/4 flour mixture over egg white mixture. Fold in remaining flour mixture by fouths in a down-up-over motion. Pour batter into ungreased tube pan. With knife gently cut through batter to break any large air bubbles then bake at 375° F. Bake 35-40 minutes.

Cool in inverted tube pans about 1 hour. Loosen sides and center with a knife, then invert cake to release from pan. Eat plain, use a dessert sauce or frost.

Angel Cakes are leavened just with air, so how you beat the eggs, the lightness in which you fold in the ingredients and the baking temperature are very important to the outcome of the cake.
