Holiday
Ladder Safety
by Faith Ranoli
Radio Host:"House &
Home "
Thursdays, 1pm PT
|
|
The holiday festivities are here. The annual hanging
of lights and decorations from eves, gutters, walls, banisters and
any other surface we can reach on our home begins. For some, this
is the only time of year the dusty ladder is pulled out of hiding.
Little thought is given to how this tool is purchased or used safely.
Ladders are labeled with duty ratings. Type I, the industrial ladder,
holds 250 pounds. Type II holds up to 225 pounds. Type III, the
household ladder, holds up to 200 pounds.
Remember to include the weight of the tools or materials you plan
to use. If you work around electrical wires, don't choose a metal
ladder. A number of accidents occur each year because power lines
and equipment wires contact metal ladders. Use a dry wooden or nonconductive
fiberglass ladder for this kind of work.
Using a Ladder
* Make sure the ladder is suited for the type of job you plan
to do (see the types above).
* Before using a ladder, especially a ladder that has been stored
in the garage for a while, inspect it for cracks or broken joints.
* Place your ladder on a stable, even, flat surface. Never place
a ladder on top of another object.
* Use the 1:4 ratio to ensure a stable working platform. Place the
base of the ladder 1 foot away of whatever it leans against for
every 4 feet of height to the point where the ladder contacts at
the top (see graphic).
* When using an A-frame stepladder, make sure the brace is locked
in place.
* If climbing onto another surface (like a roof,) make sure the
ladder extends at least three feet past the platform you're climbing
onto.
* Secure tall ladders by lashing or fastening the ladder to prevent
movement.
* Always face the ladder when climbing or descending.
* Keep both feet on the ladder - never put one foot on a rung and
the other foot on a different surface.
* Do not climb higher than the second rung on stepladders or the
third rung on straight or extension ladders.
* Never stand on the top or the paint shelf of a stepladder.
* Keep your belt buckle (if you have one) positioned between the
rungs so it doesn't catch.
* Never leave ladders unattended - kids love them.
* Never over reach, climb down and move the ladder.
* Do not place a ladder on an icy surface.
* When working with electricity, use a ladder made of wood or fiberglass.
Maintaining Ladders
Inspect ladders regularly. Stepladders and extension ladders should
be inspected for broken or frozen joints or latches. Aluminum ladders
should be inspected for cracks and broken welds. Aluminum ladders
should also be inspected for rough spots and burrs before first
use.
Wood ladders should be inspected for cracked wood, splinters, and
rot. Look for broken or loose hardware. Protect wood ladders with
linseed oil or clear sealant. Never paint a wooden ladder - the
paint may hide imperfections such as rot or cracks.
Fiberglass ladders are protected with a clear sealant. If the fiberglass
is damaged through the sealant, sand lightly before applying another
coat of lacquer.

From
the Editor's Desk
It's the season of sharing and caring. While I'm an advocate for
both on a daily basis and a fan of random acts of kindness, there's
no better way to end one year and enter the next than to do something
good for someone else. Where we as a society have gone so far astray
is in believing that demonstrations of sharing and caring must come
with a hefty price-tag.
A simple gift from the heart is more deeply appreciated and memorable.
It is the hours spent reading to a child and the paper angels we
craft for a homeless shelter and retirement home that make a real
difference. A donation of volunteer time and spare blankets to a
local animal rescue group and performing soothing songs for hospice
patients puts sharing, caring and giving in its true order.
A special gift you can give your friends, family, and others is
to let them know about HealthyLife.net. Our unique radio station
is a wellspring for positive motivation and support, and provides
inspiration and resources 24-hours-a-day. Whether someone is in
Atlanta, Georgia or in Dublin, Ireland, HealthyLife.net is there.
Our Web site also features a variety of helpful articles, show archives,
and activities. "The Susan Swanson Show" (third Tuesday
of every month, 2 p.m. PT) with host Susan Swanson, MFT, LCSW talks
about "Holidays and Families." Learn how to make "Gifts
from the Garden" with show host Elysa Markowitz ("Natural
Eating with Elysa," third Monday of each month, 8 a.m. PT).
Get "New Year Transits" with master astrologist Kristin
Fontana ("Guiding Stars with Kristin Fontana," every Wednesday,
10-11 a.m. PT). And open your path of grand possibility as show
host Dr. Margaret McCraw and her special guest, Sharon Kreighbaum,
shows you how to "Create a Different Year: Clear Out Clutter."
If you miss a particular program, all are available in the HealthyLife.net
ARCHIVES to listen to at anytime or to download in MP3, ITunes,
Podcast or RSS versions.
On behalf of everyone here at HealthyLife.net, thank you for tuning
in. We wish you a joyous holiday season and very happy and healthy
New Year. And I'd like to add a special thank you to Linda Mackenzie,
HealthyLife.net radio network creator/leader, who has given the

HOST OF
THE MONTH:
Linda Koss
Host of
"South Bay Woman"
Fridays, 12 noon PT
|
|
| Each
month we focus on one of our great hosts and this month we are talking
to Linda Koss who is the Founder and Editor of Sout Bay Woman Magazine. |
|
HL- What do you love about being a magazine publisher and radio
show host? People. I love people. All the amazing people I get
to learn all about their journey in life. How they overcame challenges
to reach for success on the other side.
HL- How do you pick your South Bay Woman Magazine Covers? Everywhere
I look I see a walking South Bay Woman Magazine cover. Everyone
has a story to tell which people can benefit from. I realized I
wanted to celebrate more people in the South Bay area because we
all can learn so much from each other so the people in the South
Bay are my covers.
HL- What are some things can we do to make our dreams come true?
Have a great support system. Just being around people who really
are passionate about their lives in a positive way and hang tight
with them helps. Also grab yourself a mentor! They can keep you
from making costly (time and money) errors. Plus remember that mistakes
are okay. They are your stepping stones to success. Be kind to yourself
and allow your dream time to grow.
HL- If you could pick anyone to team up with, who would that
be and why? I have so many idols! I think it would be Margie
Aliprandi. She went from sleeping in her car to building a multi-million
dollar business and she is so kind, sweet and really cares about
people.
HL- Describe one of your favorite South Bay-kind-of-moments.
At the beach running in the soft sand and walking back in the
water, sometimes even jumping into it. I like going on the Manhattan
Beach pier to meditate into the waves, and yes, watch the cute surfers!
HL- You're enjoying your favorite meal. What's on the menu?
Chips, salsa, pork enchiladas with rice and guacamole. I love
Mexican food.
HL- Where is a place you've always wanted to travel to? Let's
see, I always wanted to go to France, ahhh, Israel, gosh I think
Australia wins out. Sounds like fun and a place where you can go
wild.
HL-What colors do you most like to wear or surround yourself
in? I love red! Yet I enjoy soft colors like lavender-it depends
on my mood.

Tamales
de Dulce
Scott and Jack Blinn
- 30 corn husks
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 tablespoon anise
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups masa harina fino (fine corn flour)
- 1 tablespoon salt
- ½ cup salad oil
- Handful of raisins and raw peanuts (optional)
The day prior to preparing the tamales, soak corn husks in water.
After soaking for 24 hours, clean husks and set aside open. In
a medium pot, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, anise, and water.
Simmer until liquid. In a bowl, combine masa and salt. Add in
sugar mixture and salad oil. Beat until mixture is a thick paste.
Add raisins and/or peanuts (optional). Take a husk in hand and
smear a large tablespoon of masa in the center of the husk only.
Fold the sides in the bottom up-be sure the masa mixture is only
in the center of the corn husk. To cook, place in a steamer standing
up, but not too close together (the steam must circulate). If
you don't have a steamer, use a deep pot with a rack over about
an inch of boiling water. Cover and cook over medium heat for
a gentle simmer for 45-60 minutes. Check for firmness-tamales
are done when a fork comes out clean. Uncover. Tamales will harden
as they cool.
Jackson Ortega Blinn is a musician, following in the footsteps
of his dad. Scott Blinn is a University of San Diego graduate
who has been an award-winning professional musician recording
music and performing around the worldfor over 20 years. He is
a three-time "San Diego Music Award" recipient with
multiple nominations for his own work, as well as his work on
projects for other bands. Scott is highly respected by his peers
and has played with such acclaimed artists as Billy Gibbons (ZZ
Top), Willie Nelson, Dr. John, Brian Setzer (Stray Cats), and
many other top artists. In 2010, Scott founded "Rock Academy
of San Diego." Inspired by the need to bring music back into
economically strapped schools and communities, he is dedicated
to ensuring the arts survive during unprecedented educational
financial cutbacks. In addition, he serves as Director for Blues
Music Summer Camp, and as a leader for the Blues in the Schools
after-school program.

Health
Tip: Healing Power of the Mind
|
|
Negative emotions lower our immune system and keeps
us bogged down mentally, delays and stops us from reaching our goals
and actually inhibits the brain in accomplishing what we want. Positive
emotions boost the immune system and makes the brain work in a balanced
mode which is conducive to change. So how do you keep positive?
1. Can't Keep Positive if you can't Forgive. When you don't
forgive, negative energy swirls in the background of your life keeping
you tied to negative thoughts. By forgiving you release the attachment
to the significance of the event rendering it powerless against
you and the negative energy attachment is broken.
2. Can't Keep Positive if you don't have
Gratitude. Thinking of the things you have rather than the things
you don't increases the positive energy around you and that attracts
more positive things to you.
3. Can't keep Positive if you don't have the concept
of Oneness and that we are all connected. Thinking you're alone
and powerless is a misperception - we are all connected and everything
we think, do or say affects our energy and all the energy in the
universe.
