FEATURE ARTICLE
Holiday Ladder Safety
by Faith Ranoli

Radio Host:"Heart & Home "
Thursdays, 1 pm PT

The holiday festivities are here. The annual hanging of lights and decorations from eves, gutters, walls, banisters and any other surface we can reach on our home begins. For some, this is the only time of year the dusty ladder is pulled out of hiding. Little thought is given to how this tool is purchased or used safely.
Ladders are labeled with duty ratings. Type I, the industrial ladder, holds 250 pounds. Type II holds up to 225 pounds. Type III, the household ladder, holds up to 200 pounds.
Remember to include the weight of the tools or materials you plan to use. If you work around electrical wires, don't choose a metal ladder. A number of accidents occur each year because power lines and equipment wires contact metal ladders. Use a dry wooden or nonconductive fiberglass ladder for this kind of work.

Using a Ladder:
* Make sure the ladder is suited for the type of job you plan to do (see the types above).
* Before using a ladder, especially a ladder that has been stored in the garage for a while, inspect it for cracks or broken joints.
* Place your ladder on a stable, even, flat surface. Never place a ladder on top of another object.
* Use the 1:4 ratio to ensure a stable working platform. Place the base of the ladder 1 foot away of whatever it leans against for every 4 feet of height to the point where the ladder contacts at the top (see graphic).
* When using an A-frame stepladder, make sure the brace is locked in place.
* If climbing onto another surface (like a roof,) make sure the ladder extends at least three feet past the platform you're climbing onto.
* Secure tall ladders by lashing or fastening the ladder to prevent movement.
* Always face the ladder when climbing or descending.
* Keep both feet on the ladder - never put one foot on a rung and the other foot on a different surface.
* Do not climb higher than the second rung on stepladders or the third rung on straight or extension ladders.
* Never stand on the top or the paint shelf of a stepladder.
* Keep your belt buckle (if you have one) positioned between the rungs so it doesn't catch.
* Never leave ladders unattended - kids love them.
* Never over reach, climb down and move the ladder.
* Do not place a ladder on an icy surface.
* When working with electricity, use a ladder made of wood or fiberglass.

Maintaining Ladders:
Inspect ladders regularly. Stepladders and extension ladders should be inspected for broken or frozen joints or latches. Aluminum ladders should be inspected for cracks and broken welds. Aluminum ladders should also be inspected for rough spots and burrs before first use.
Wood ladders should be inspected for cracked wood, splinters, and rot. Look for broken or loose hardware. Protect wood ladders with linseed oil or clear sealant. Never paint a wooden ladder - the paint may hide imperfections such as rot or cracks.
Fiberglass ladders are protected with a clear sealant. If the fiberglass is damaged through the sealant, sand lightly before applying another coat of lacquer.

From the Editor's Desk
"In December, let us remember to open our hearts to the Light of Love for all. Be kinder to people and help where you can-the positive energy will be returned back to you so make an extra effort during this holiday season. Make it about the love and not the money. Try buying from your local boutiques and businesses so we can support our communities and each other. If we do this, we can turn this economic situation around and give the money to the smaller businesses helping them to survive."-Linda Mackenzie, Founder/CEO, HealthyLife.Net.

Under hard times, especially extended periods of such, it is so easy to keep looking at the seemingly bareness of it all, forgetting to enjoy the colorful and diverse splendor that life offers us each and every day. Underneath, even stark reality, there is still great mystical movement of growth and rebirth going on-part of this involves letting go. It is transpiring even if we cannot see it. We may not understand or fully grasp its entirety, nor is that necessarily important to the overall process. Flowers that push their way through hardened concrete so as to open and embrace the sun's warmth know this-to the naked eye, they're defying incredible odds, achieving amazing feats. Pure love in motion, I might add.

Life is a series of rebloomings. Take a lesson from the flowers in the concrete, envision and open up your life as you'd love it to be, bask in warmth-head towards the light. You are never alone. HealthyLife.Net Radio Network is here to help you. No matter what area you are reblooming towards our wonderful hosts are there to help. Listen to their shows and take with you a piece of information that might make your journey easier or better yet call in and talk with our hosts while they are on air. They are ready to help you and its even toll free to call at 800-555-5453.

The wonderful aspect we have as human beings is - the choice to grow a life that we love and to bloom whenever and wherever, including in Winterish times as these have been. Faith, trust, and love are part of the key ingredients-include those and watch the abundant harvest that springs forth in the present and in the future. As our station Founder Linda Mackenzie has shared above, positive energy and love this holiday season makes for hearty plantings; so much good will take place for others and be returned back your way for having done so. Linda wisely and simply notes, "Make it about the love." Winter or not, adversity or not, you'll find that all good things arise particularly from that special place. It's always within you, whatever time of year.

On behalf of everyone here at HealthyLife.Net, thank you for your continued support. Best wishes and happy holidays.

Namaste.

December
HOST OF THE MONTH:

The Barbara Berg Show
Tuesdays, 12 p.m. PT

Each month we focus on one of our radio hosts and this month we are talking to Barbara Berg who is a clinical social worker, multi-book author and a radio/TV expert personality.

HL- What is a woman's interdependence?A woman's interdependence is being in the flow of knowing when to put her energy into outer world activity and when to put her energy into her personal and intimate relationships.
HL-Can you give us tip on how to improve a relationship if you're married?
I have found that if couples focus on new things they can do together rather than overly comment on what's wrong with the relationship, marriages can improve. Also, if each person feels there is a way their needs can be met and at least considered as important by the other person, they will be more inclined to give the other individual what they want and need as much as they can.
HL- How can you get a relationship if you're single?
Allowing highly regarded space, time, and presence for the new relationship seems to be a requirement to attract and maintain ongoing commitment from someone else. However, it appears that women are still expected to work their schedules around their men rather than visa-versa. The more the guy really gets that you would rather be with him than anything else you do, the more he will be inclined to be supportive of your passions and interests and time away from him.
HL- What is Ring Shui?
Ring Shui is a fun and amazing approach that came to me over the past ten years as I observed the ring-wearing behaviors of myself and others as we discussed our beliefs and opinions about relationships. Over time, I observed a remarkable correlation between where women wear their rings on their fingers and what they believe about the relationships in their lives. I came to see when women moved their rings to different fingers on their hands, the relationships in their lives improved, and so did their attitudes about them.
HL-How did you get to be a relationship coach?
I am actually a licensed clinical social worker, and have been in private practice in Southern California since 1992. I specialize in midlife transitions, and having a "successful midlife crisis." I believe I came to do this because having balance in my own life was such an issue. Now I am also greatly enjoying conducting Ring Shui events for parties, workshops, conventions, retreats, and other avenues where people are interested in new approaches to dealing with relationships and creating positive and empowering change in their own outlooks on life.
HL-What can people expect when they listen to your radio show?
People can expect fun and passionate information and conversations about relationships and life in a new and innovative way. They'll come to enjoy and see their ring-wearing behavior in an entirely new light, one that will help in transformational ways as they are making changes in their relationships and every other aspect of their lives. There is also much more to it than just wearing your rings. We'll also discuss ways to stay in touch with who you are and what you need so you know when and how to be there for others, inter-connect and expand your "glee" with others, and when to focus on yourself.

Hunan-Style Tofu & Vegetables
Chris Vachon

Marinade
o ½ C rice wine
o ½ C soy sauce
o a C vegetable broth
o 3 T apple cider vinegar
o 1 tsp powdered hot red peppers (or less or more, to taste)

Tofu and Vegetables
o 1 lb firm tofu
o Broccoli, mushrooms, snow peas, baby peas, and other favorite vegetables

Sauce
o b C vegetable broth
o ½ C red wine
o 1 tsp thick soy sauce
o ½ C soy sauce
o 2 T cornstarch or arrowroot
o ½ C water
o 2-3 large cloves fresh garlic
o ¼" piece of fresh ginger root
o 2 T salted black beans
o ½ C peanut oil
o 5-6 dried hot red peppers

For the marinade: mix together rice wine, soy sauce, vegetable broth, and apple cider vinegar. Stir in hot red peppers. Slice tofu thinly and evenly into strips (about ¼"-thick). Put strips in a bowl and pour in marinade. Mix thoroughly and cover; set aside. Dice vegetables into small, bite-sized pieces. Dice broccoli and put it into a bowl; do the same with the mushrooms. Tail the snow peas and put them into a bowl. Put the baby peas into a bowl. Make the sauce: Combine vegetable broth, red wine, and soy sauces in a bowl. Mix together, set aside. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch or arrowroot into water and set aside. Chop garlic and ginger root very finely. In another bowl, mix salted black beans, garlic, and ginger together; set aside. Light up stove to high and heat wok until it smokes. Add peanut oil. Get oil really hot, and then add dried hot peppers. Next, add the ginger/garlic/black bean mix, stirring constantly. Use two long-handled wok spatulas while stir-frying. Add tofu. Stir for 1 minute. Add broccoli (and other "harder" vegetables). Continue stirring-keep burner on maximum heat throughout. Another 30 seconds later, add snow peas, and then the baby peas. Pour in sauce, stirring quickly and evenly. Add mushrooms to wok. Re-stir and add in cornstarch or arrowroot/water mixture. Garnish with chopped fresh shallots or spring onions. Serve with steamed rice or noodles.
