Each month we focus on one of our great hosts and this month we are talking to Jed Mottley and Jack Maher from Feed the Kitty, an American rock band from Los Angeles, CA performs over 300 shows a year.


HL: How and why did you start the band Feed the Kitty?
We accidentally started this band in 1999 at the University of Arizona because we didn't want to get "real" jobs.

HL: How does your performing help people's lives?
People tell us all the time that we positively impact there lives through our music. It feels good to make people happy and give them a release from their everyday lives.

HL: What is a tip you can give to someone starting out?
Be nice to everyone and take any gig you can.

HL: What was your most favorite and least favorite gig and why?
Our favorite gigs are when we are giving back to charity. When we played a nursing home in Inglewood this year and it brought tears to my eyes. Our least favorite gigs is when they forget to pay us.

HL: What types of genres does Feed the Kitty perform?
We don't discriminate when it comes to genres, we like to incorporate anything that feels right for the song. Country, Americana, Rock, Blues, Funk, Jazz and Reggae.

HL: How do you guys have fun?
We have fun playing music and enjoying our lives. We try not to take anything for granted and play every show like it's our last.

HL: What types of things do you cover on your radio show?
On "Feed the Kitty Power Hour" we interview musicians, bands, actors, authors, professional athletes, professional poker players, and anything that's interesting. We usually talk about life, love, religion, politics, sex, drugs and rock n roll.

40 Ways to Determine Your Inner Freedom

Want to know how free you really are? Good! You're about to be presented with a unique opportunity to learn all about your individual level of inner liberty.

As you review each of the inner liberties on the list, just note mentally whether or not that particular freedom belongs to you. Our intention is simply to learn what's true about ourselves, not to prove anything about ourselves. Allow these forty freedoms to awaken and stir that secret part of you that knows living in any kind of bondage is a lie. Then follow your own natural sensing all the way to the free life. You're Well Along Freedom's Path When:

1. You have no desire to change places in life with anyone else.

2. You step over setbacks without stopping or looking back.

3. You accept and appreciate praise, but never take it to heart.

4. You don't overeat or feel driven to diet.

5. You don't think about your sex life.

6. You meet and do what's true without fear of the consequences.

7. You really don't want anything from anyone.

8. You stop thinking about how much money you may or may not have.

9. You don't carry any upset from the last moment into the present one.

10. You have no interest in old resentments.

11. You start spending more time alone and enjoying it more.

12. You stop dreaming of the perfect vacation.

13. You're neither frightened nor shocked by the evening news.

14. You stop making deals with yourself.

15. You dress for comfort, not for compliments.

16. You lose all interest in trying to win mental arguments.

17. You don't blame anyone else for the way you feel.

18. You forget what it was you didn't like about someone.

19. You're awake to and spontaneously considerate of the needs of others.

20. You see beauty in life where you never could see it before.

21. Your life gets progressively simpler.

22. You see where you're wrong sooner than later, and stop defending yourself faster.

23. You do what you don't want to do (but need to do) and you do it with a lighter spirit.

24. You're not afraid of having nothing to say or do, if that's your true condition.

25. You can take criticism without cringing away from the truth it may hold.

26. You have no concern for what others may think of you.

27. You stop trying to make others see life in your way.

28. You enjoy the sound of silence as much or more than the sound of your own voice.

29. You see the same unpleasant traits within yourself that have made you shun others.

30. You say what you want, and not what you think others may want to hear you say.

31. You actually enjoy hearing about the good fortune of someone else.

32. You see more and more just how unfree you and others really are.

33. Your moods are fewer, lighter, and move on much quicker.

34. You see that society is destroying itself and that the only solution is self-change.

35. You can listen to others without the need to tell them what you know.

36. You don't find a thrill in any kind of fear.

37. You know that forgiveness of others is the kindest thing you can do for yourself.

38. You realize that the world is the way it is because you are the way you are.

39. You'd rather not think about yourself.

40. You can't come up with one good reason why you should ever be anxious or frightened.

There's one more important point to bring to our attention: never be discouraged over your present location! Discouragement is a negative emotion with more than one trick up its dark sleeve. It tricks you into mentally or emotionally dwelling in the very place you want to leave. Drop all such sorrow permanently by daring to see through this deception of the unconscious mind. Who you really are, your True Nature, is no more tied to the kind of person you've been than the wind is tied to the skies through which it moves. Your past is just that, the past, a place within your psyche with no more reality to it than the picture of a castle on a postcard is made from stone. You have a destination far beyond where you find yourself standing today.

It may not seem so at first, but your new findings are a great start. Now keep going. Use this list and your new discoveries to help you ignite your wish to be free. Then step back and welcome the spiritual firestorm. Watch as it burns away the ties that bind. This is what it means to let the Light fight for you.

Authors As Radio Hosts?

Can authors make successful radio hosts or should they just remain guests of radio shows? That is a big question that deserves an honest answer.

We all should know that publicity for or about your book (or service, or product for that matter) is needed for promotion in order to get sales. In essence this means, if someone doesn't know that your book is out there, even if its the best book in the world, how will they know to read it? So publicity and promotion is necessary.

I have to say that being a successful radio host, or being an author, is not as easy as it looks. These are two distinct and separate fields, requiring different education, knowledge and skill sets. Real internet radio is NOT a hodgepodge of personal blogs or programs thrown together at random with someone calling it a radio station or network. It is also not a podcast. A podcast is a completely different medium. A podcast is not a radio show but a method of accessing any digital audio file made available on the Internet for download.

There are many internet based radio stations that will tell you every author can be a radio host with one idea in mind - and that is to get your money. They do no training in radio broadcasting, they don't give you the rules for good broadcasting. There is no cross promotion of your radio show being done in other shows. Plus you are usually competing with thousands of hosts, channels and even other networks on the same site to gain visibility of listeners.

These stations, rarely get many listeners for their hosts (despite what 'listener numbers' they may give you - another discussion for another time.) The host will have to promote their own show to be recognized and gain visibility on their own radio station - a full time job. So in this case, if you are an author and trying to promote your book - starting a radio show means you will have to promote that too. Another thing to keep in mind is that these stations have little or no syndication and may not be run on a traditional radio time clock, which proven over time works to get and KEEP an audience. Remember if people are tuning into radio, they want and expect a standard radio experience - if they don't get it... most listeners are gone way before the show is over.

Choosing the Right Supplement

Buying a dietary supplement is not as easy as it looks. There are hundreds of different brands, high priced and low priced supplements and even different qualities. Add the questions of what your body specifically needs and how much should you take and the maze of supplement buying becomes even harder. Here are some "Do's and Dont's" on selecting supplements.

Don't Choose Supplements:
" that are not a natural color. (Red, Blue or Purple supplements contain artificial dyes or colorings.)

" with synthetic vitamin C & E. These are produced in a laboratory and are not natural. There are differences in functions, breakdown and absorption. The best natural source of Vitamin E are mixed d-tocopherols (not dl-tocopherols) and natural sources for vitamin C are rose hips and calcium ascorbate.

" based on price. Some high end vitamins may be supporting advertising costs and are not necessarily using better ingredients
.
" is low priced because you may be not be getting the potency you need, they may be using synthetics or using a high amount of fillers such as cellulose to keep the price low.

" assuming that by buying a name brand that you are getting quality. A lot of the known U.S. brands these days have been bought out by big conglomerates which have a larger overhead cost and they may or may not skimp on the quality of the supplement.

Do Remember To:
" try and find a basic multi-supplement that includes all the vitamins, minerals, bioflavinoids, enzymes, natural food concentrates, antioxidants, herbs, essential fatty acids, fiber and green foods in one formula. This will keep the amount of pills you are taking to a minimum and will also be better for your budget.

" buy a supplement from a reputable manufacturer and is made in a pharmaceutical grade, approved facility. These facilities adhere to higher quality control from the raw material stage to the finished product.

" buy a medium priced product for the best value.

" that manufacturers usually make supplement dosages for a person of 140 lbs. in weight. So adjust the amount of the supplement you are taking accordingly.

" buy a vitamin with all the B's in it because all the B's work synergistically together.

" That you may need to take additional Vitamin C, E and B complex when you are ill, so take this into consideration when you are selecting your daily multi supplement.

" look at a label's "other ingredients" which are listed in order of potency. So if you see fillers like cellulose, before actual supplement names, you are getting more fillers than supplement.

" avoid supplements with sugar, starch, corn, wheat, iron, dairy, salt, artificial flavorings, artificial sweeteners or artificial preservatives.

Please note that it will usually take a 4-6 week period before you see the effect of any supplement.

Recipe of the Month

Angel Food Cake

Oven Temperature: 375° F
Baking Time: 35-40 min., 1-10" tube pan

1 cups wheat free (gluten free) flour blend
1/2 teaspoons of xantham gum
12 large egg whites (room temperature)
1 cup maple syrup
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon almond extract

Sift together flour blend and xantham gum.

Using an electric mixer at high speed beat egg whites, cream of tartar salt, vanilla and almond extract until stiff and forms soft glossy peaks.

Continue beating as you slowly add maple syrup, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating after each addition.

Sift 1/4 flour mixture over egg white mixture. Fold in remaining flour mixture by fouths in a down-up-over motion.

Pour batter into ungreased tube pan. With knife gently cut through batter to break any large air bubbles then bake at 375° F. Bake 35-40 minutes.

Cool in inverted tube pans about 1 hour. Loosen sides and center with a knife, then invert cake to release from pan.

Eat plain, use a dessert sauce or frost with a Strawberry Meringue or Chocolate Frosting.

Angel Cakes are leavened just with air, so how you beat the eggs, the lightness in which you fold in the ingredients and the baking temperature are very important to the outcome of the cake.

October - More than Pumpkins: An Opportunity to Improve Your Life

"Ghosts and Goblins and Witches on Brooms. Wind in the Trees singing horrible tunes. These are the things that are heard and seen...on a dark night called Halloween." That's the old song I would sing to my daughter whenever October tumbled into place. According to BBC Online, it is "widely believed" that many Halloween traditions originated from the ancient Celtic harvest festival Samhain and that costumes were worn to ward off ghosts. I like to think of October as more than just Halloween. Fall is a special time of change; sweater weather takes over as temperatures get cooler, Red, yellow, and orange leaves are on display and they begin to pile on the ground as the wind uplifts them into autumnal dances. This particular change of season might also help explain the sudden and insatiable craving for all things apple and pumpkin-lattes, pies, roasted seeds, pancakes, and even apple and pumpkin ale. Here's some other things that happened to improve life in past Octobers:: October 1, 1908 - Henry Ford's Model T, a "universal car" designed for the masses, went on sale for the first time, improving transportation. October 2, 1968 - California's Redwood National Park was established improving conservation. Did you know that redwoods are the tallest of all trees, growing up to 400 feet during a lifetime that can span 2,000 years. October 24, 1861 - The first transcontinental telegram in America was sent from San Francisco to Washington, addressed to President Abraham Lincoln from the Chief Justice of California improving communication.
