How to Be Happy
in Your Work
by Gini Graham Scott
Radio Host:"Changemakers"
Thursdays, 8am PT
|
|
I've been thinking
about how this is an ideal time to put more fun in your work and
your life.
To this end, I've outlined the 12
principles of happiness and how you might apply them to your own
situation today. of happiness below. Remind yourself to think about
them each day, so you act in tandem with them. This way experiencing
happiness becomes a way of life-an overriding outlook composed of
qualities such as optimism, courage, love, and fulfillment, so you
enjoy every day, no matter what happens. In turn, this focus on
being happy will help to drive away fear and other negative feelings
towards work and your economic future.
1. First cultivate love, which is the polar opposite of fear. To
do this remind yourself to experience and express appreciation for
the work, friends, and significant others. Focus on what you have
now, so you feel gratitude, not on what you don't have or used to
have, causing you to feel a sense of loss.
2. Be optimistic. Put painful events behind you by learning from
whatever difficulties you encounter. Optimism can also help you
overcome any regrets for the past and lead you to feel confident
about whatever the future will bring.
3. Cultivate courage by actively embracing challenges as a way to
overcome feelings of fear.
4. Remind yourself that you always have the freedom to choose whatever
the situation. If you feel stuck where you are, consider the different
ways you might remake yourself to do something different; consider
how you might bring your current skill set to bear on the needs
created by today's economic situation.
5. Be proactive. This enables you to shape your own destiny, rather
than waiting for other people or events to make you happy. Think
about what you might change, what you might do differently, to reshape
what you are doing now and do it.
6. Gain security through liking and accepting who you are, so you
have an inner sense of assurance, since everything else in life
changes. Security has to come from within, not from outer attributes,
such as money or popularity.
7. Take steps to be in good health, because you need to feel healthy
to be happy-and at the same time, feeling happy will contribute
to your good health.
8. Have a sense of spirituality and be open to experiences beyond
your everyday life. This sense can then help to give you a feeling
of strength and purpose.
9. Take steps to embrace and express altruism, since this brings
great satisfaction through giving to others and feeling connected
to them; it helps provide you with a sense of purpose.
10. Cultivate a sense of perspective, so you are better able to
making distinctions between big and small problems and prioritize
what's more important, rather than being rigid. This view enables
you to remain attuned to the big picture. For instance, you might
see the current economic uncertainty as a time of change preparing
you to move on to newer, different, and more satisfying work opportunities
in the future.
11. It also helps to look on whatever happens with a sense of humor.
Even during bad times, humor will help you lighten up and move past
those difficulties.
12. Finally, have a sense of purpose. This gives meaning to your
life. You feel a sense of satisfaction that you are doing what you
were meant to do.
Now that you know the 12 happiness principles, think about how you
might apply them in your work and life. You may recognize that you
are already using many of these principles, but now pay attention
to how and when you are using them, so you appreciate yourself for
what you are already doing. In fact that's the first principle:
love or in this case, showing appreciation for yourself.

From
the Editor's Desk
I just recently saw a little saying
"Save the tatas!" spread out across the front of a pink
t-shirt. It brought a smile on with its creativity. To some, tatas
means potatoes, of course; in this case, the cute awareness-raising
shirt was referring to a serious problem, breast cancer, this on-going
health and well-being battle afflicting millions of women and men
around the world. October has been designated National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month in the United States, "celebrating 25 years
of awareness, education, and empowerment."
Whatever path someone may choose to walk on how to prevent, manage
or treat this disease, creating and maintaining a strong immune
system is foremost to being well. Our
own HealthyLife.Net radio show host Susun Weed who airs her show
"Green Blessings" the 1st Monday of every month at 8am
PT is an extraordinary teacher and leader in breast health. She
even authored a must-read book called "Breast Cancer? Breast
Health! The Wise Woman Way.
HealthyLife.Net host and award winning
actress Sally Kirkland is also a fore-runner and advocate for breast
health, especially silicone implants of which she went through horrid
silicon poisoning and she readily speaks out to help others understand
and avert the same illness. Sally can be heard every Monday at 10
am PT.
HealthyLife.Net's innovative programming
provides you daily with a variety of knowledgeable, experienced,
health and well-being-oriented hosts and shows, ranging from HealthyLife.Net
founder/CEO Linda Mackenzie's "Creative Health & Spirit"
to Dr. Bernie Siegel's "Mind Health Matters." Linda is
not only the force behind this leading positive talk radio station,
she is the author and producer of insightful and award-winning books
and audio products-among my personal favorites, "Help Heal
Yourself with Self Hypnosis" which has a chapter dedicated
to breast cancer. She can be heard on HealthyLife.Net every Tuesday
morning at 8am PT. Dr. Siegel is one of the world's foremost physician
and advocate for individuals facing challenges of all chronic illnesses.
In 1978 Bernie started Exceptional Cancer Patients (ECAP), a specific
form of individual and group therapy utilizing patients' dreams,
drawings and images.
See you next month. Think positive!
Namaste.

October
HOST OF THE MONTH:
Ralph
White
of "Consulting 2 Win!"
Wednesdays, 1 p.m. PT
|
|
| Each
month we focus on one of our radio hosts, and this month we are talking
to Ralph
White who has a degree in Business Administration, ran his own company
for 37 years and has been a business coach & consultant for 16
years. |
|
HL- What led you
to being a consultant? I
had hired consultants in the past and found them to be an effective
resource for getting results in my business. I signed up for some
business training courses and also experienced great results. When
the opportunity presented itself for me to train as a consultant,
I jumped at the chance to share what I had learned with other business
people like myself.
HL-What is the most important thing someone needs to know about
business? Actually there are four: Always make a profit, always
be selling, always stay on top of your numbers and treat customers
and employees like you would like to be treated.
HL- How can business and life be transformed at the same time?
Your business is a reflection of you. The better you take care of
yourself, the better the business will run. The more personal awareness
you have, the more you will be aware of how to manage your business.
The better you manage your time in your business, the more time
you will have for your personal life. All the actions of one impact
the actions of the other.
HL- What makes a business successful? A business is successful
when it meets the goals and objectives you set for it. It must be
profitable, it must grow, and it must provide a future for you and
your employees. To be successful your business and employees must
deliver an extraordinary service or product and have fun doing it.
HL- How important is sales & marketing in business? Sales
and marketing are the heartbeat, the lifeblood of your business.
If you don't have sales, you don't have a business. At least 25%
of your time and your employees time should be spent on sales and
marketing each week.
HL-What can listeners gain from your radio show? They get to
experience what it is like to work with a coach. They can decrease
their learning curve on fundamental business actions. They can get
their questions answered and hear ideas and possibilities for their
own businesses.
HL-What can people expect when they listen to your show Consulting2Win?
People can expect to learn practical business tools and ideas that
work. They can use these tools immediately to create results in
their businesses.
HL-What do you do for fun? I am an artist. For fun, I express
myself on canvas. You can see my art at www.ralphwhite.com.

Pasta
La Jolla
Peter, Hall and Tripp Sprague and Fred Benedetti
o 3 large bell peppers (1 red, 1 yellow, and 1 green)
o Olive oil
o 1 lb pasta (any kind; my dad favors linguine)
o 3-6 cloves fresh garlic (to taste)
o 4-6 oz whipping cream
o 2 oz (drained weight) capers
o 1 C grated Parmesan cheese
Fill the largest pot you have with water, to within 1"
of the top. Cover. Place covered pot over high heat. Cut
and remove stems and white-ish "ribs" from the
bell peppers, then slice into very thin strips. Place a
large frying pan over medium heat. Pour enough olive oil
into the frying pan to cover about a quarter of the surface.
Place bell pepper strips into the heated pan, stir, and
cover. When the water in the large pot has come to a boil,
slide pasta in-you may want to break it in half, lengthwise.
Stir pasta for a minute or so with a wooden spoon to prevent
it from sticking to bottom. Keep it at a moderate boil.
With wooden spoons, regularly stir and mix up pepper
strips so that they cook evenly. Between stirrings, chop
garlic into small pieces. Regularly test the texture of
the cooking pasta by chewing on a piece. Cook until it is
al dente. When pasta is done, pour it and all of the water
into a colander, so the pasta can be as dry as possible.
Pour a little olive oil and the cream into the pot in which
the pasta cooked. Add the cooked strips of bell pepper,
garlic, and capers. Add the pasta to the same pot. Stir,
adding small amounts of Parmesan cheese until the sauce
is thickened to your satisfaction.
Peter and his brother, Tripp, their father, Hall, and Fred
Benedetti are principals in SBE (Strivin' to Break Even)
Records. SBE has released several albums, including the
award-winning Blurring the Edges. Over his thirty plus
years as a professional, multi-award-winning musician, Peter
Sprague has evolved into a musical powerhouse, having produced
and or played on over 250 recordings. Though Peter's roots
are deep in bebop and Brazilian rhythms, he is prolific
in many styles of music. Peter has published eleven songbooks
of his own music, including The Peter Sprague Guitar Technique,
which is required study at Grossmont College in San Diego,
California. Peter, who was inspired by his father's love
of jazz music, has studied with such guitar greats as Pat
Metheny, Madame Challof, and Albin Czak and has played with
renowned artists such as Art Pepper, Hubert Laws, Chick
Corea, Alfonse Mouzon, Al Jarreau and many more. He also
has a group called the Peter Sprague String Orchestra. Peter
taught music at both Musicians Institute in Hollywood and
California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. Web site:
