Herbs That
Ease Anxiety & Fear

Fear and anxiety are
closely linked, but quite different. Fear is focused, anxiety is
diffuse. Fear is health promoting and protective: It keeps us from
jumping off cliffs. Anxiety can destroy health and increase our
vulnerability: It shortens our breath, narrows our blood vessels,
and interferes with the functioning of the immune system. Fear is
useful energy; it calls to our courage. Anxiety is useless; it promotes
feelings of insecurity, helplessness, weakness.
Notice the difference in yourself
between fear and anxiety. Whenever possible, find the fear hidden
in your anxiety and let it call forth your strength and power. The
following remedies can help you make this transformation:
Yoga postures, yoga breathing,
and quiet, focused meditation are excellent ways to tonify (and
soothe) the sympathetic nervous system. Regular practice alleviates
anxiety, often permanently. If you feel so anxious you think you
might burst, try the lion pose. Open your mouth very wide; even
wider! Stick your tongue out; even further. Open your eyes really
wide; bigger. Rotate eyes left, then right. Breathe deeply and exhale
fully up to ten times. Keep the shoulders and the forehead relaxed.
This pose unblocks the throat, releases facial tension, relaxes
the breathing muscles, and relieves anxiety.
Stinging nettle infusion strengthens
the adrenals: relieving anxiety and building focused energy. Depleted
adrenals often over-react, giving rise to sudden sensations of anxiety,
fear, and nervousness. Use bulk herb, not tea bags, not capsules.
Put one ounce by weight (about a cup by volume) of the dried nettle
herb in a quart jar. Fill the jar to the top with boiling water
and cover tightly. Let steep for at least four hours; overnight
is fine. Strain herb out and drink the remaining liquid. Iced nettle
infusion is particularly good. The taste is green, like spinach
broth, and is better seasoned with salt than sugar or honey. Refrigerate
your nettle infusion after straining it and drink it promptly as
it is likely to ferment is kept for more than two days.
Oatstraw infusion is another favorite
of those who want to feel less anxious. Preparation is the same
as for nettle infusion; remember to avoid tea bags and capsules.
The taste of oatstraw is softer and more mellow; you will enjoy
it warm with a little honey. Green oat tincture is much more powerful
than oatstraw infusion. It is especially useful for those whose
anxiety is combined with excessive nervous energy. Or try a hot
bath with lemon balm or oatstraw; an ancient remedy for bad cases
of the "nerves." Ahhhh
Motherwort tincture is my favorite
calmative. It is not sleep inducing nor mind numbing. A dose of
10-20 drops can safely be taken as often as every ten minutes, if
needed, to calm and soothe sore spirits. "Like sitting in my
mother's lap," one satisfied user commented. Motherwort tea
tastes terrible and is not very effective; likewise the capsules
are not useful. Motherwort tincture can be taken every day if you
wish, but you will find that you don't need it as you have used
it for a while.
Skullcap tincture is less addictive
than St Joan's/St. John's Wort and often more effective. The dose
is 10-20 drops of fresh plant tincture or 1-2 dropperfuls of dried
plant tincture. Skullcap can also be sleep inducing, but it is rarely
habituating.
Exercise is a ready remedy for overwhelming
anxiety. If you feel like running away from it all, running or skating
or walking briskly might be the very thing to do. Fifteen to twenty
minutes of heart-pounding exercise will use up your excess adrenalin
and "eat up" your stress.
Of course you don't want to do all these things at once! But you
could join a yoga class, use nettle or oatstraw infusion daily,
and have a bottle of motherwort or skullcap tincture handy for times
when you are exceptionally anxious. By working with strengthening
herbs and exercises, you not only relieve the bothersome symptoms
but improve your overall health. That's the Wise Woman Way.

From
the Editor's Desk
One of the guiding life principles
my mom always promoted to her children was that of leaving the planet
a better place for our having been here-carrying things out with
a positive attitude wherever possible.
While perhaps true, as most of us
know, that can buzz right out the window when you're getting yelled
at and flipped off by the guy in the car sitting wedged up against
on your bumper in 5 o'clock freeway traffic.
Welcome to Human Being 101. The key
is that how you handle these types of situations is what really
matters, for yourself and for others and ultimately for the planet.
Attitude is indeed everything-a positive attitude especially. It
attracts or magnetizes good in a powerful way. Here's some quick
tips on learning to attract a positive attitude:
-Create a high set point for your day to begin on, establishing
a pace. Like a magnet, the positive outlook begins to attract or
snowball to it even more positive people, places, and things. It
can be habit-forming.
-Take some time to discover your hidden negativity set point(s)
and find ways to clear them out or change them. HealthyLife.Net
founder/CEO Linda Mackenzie, CHT, PhD (c) offers a free "Negativity
Test" on her Web site at www.lindamackenzie.net/hiddennegativitytest.htm.
As Linda shares, "Each of us have hidden negative energy that
stops us from being who we are meant to be. Learning to identify
your areas of hidden negativity can help you release and lead you
to discover your path to a healthier, happier life filled with purpose."
-Tune out negativity, tune in empowered attitude. Keep your setting
to HealthyLife.Net for daily uplifting boosts through our "all
positive talk" radio station. For instance, show host Jonathan
Goldman on his Healing Sounds Show shares insights, techniques,
and healing sounds to help you learn how to use sound to create
positive changes for personal and planetary healing. Join host Patty
Kamson and her guests on her show Life in the Galaxy to explore
how astrology can help your relationships with family, friends and
co-workers in everyday life. Tune in to Ralph White and find out
how to turn your business into a positive, affluent one on his show
Consulting 2 Win.
Keep in mind these helpful words from
Winston Churchill: "Attitude is a little thing that makes a
big difference."
See you next month. Think positive!
Namaste.

HOST OF THE MONTH:
Mike
Austin
of "Blue Planet Almanac!"
4th Mon every month, 8 a.m. PT
|
|
| Each
month we focus on one of our radio hosts, and this month we are talking
to Mike
Austin who is a green advocate. |
|
HL-What is Blue Planet Almanac? As Earthlings, we've often
misunderstood our role and effect on our planet, and we're now seeing
the results of our actions. Blue Planet Almanac is a radio newsmagazine
and Internet news site reviewing essential concerns in lifestyles
of health and sustainability. With leanings toward conservation,
environmental and social responsibility, I aim to present, "Good
choices for Earthlings."
HL- How important is integrity? One is nothing without it.
HL- What is your background? Many years as a development expert
for leading edge nonprofit and for-profit organizations in fields
such as education, health, art and the environment - increasing
their revenue, refining their technology and improving their marketing.
Many years as a father and husband.
HL-What awareness are you trying to create with your radio show?
In every day I try to apply what I've learned about sustainability
into my next action, and in every day I try and learn something
new about sustainability.
HL- How do you stay focused? First, I pick a goal that gets
me excited and happy and go get it. Focus tends to come naturally
after that because whatever I'm doing holds my attention. In a "micro"
sense I find that meditation, exercise and stretching or yoga several
times each week encourage my focus.
HL-What are your favorite hobbies? Although it's not really
a hobby, talking with my son is at the top of the list. Next would
be the application of consciousness to environmental concerns, including
talking to people and creating what we'll do together. I've also
the perspective of many activities from my past, including downhill
or cross-country skiing, fishing, piloting my road bicycle on mountain
roads at speeds up to 45 MPH and even road racing my car at open-track
events.
HL- What's your favorite word and why? That's a tough one,
because I do words by nature and have so many favorites. A word's
simply a representation of a concept. But one concept which comes
frequently to mind is "saksat-karana," from Hindu thought.
My understanding is it means "direct perception." Which
I interpret as meaning first-hand knowledge of something without
having to interpret or experience it.

Enchilada
Casserole
Tim Flannery
o 1 C grated cheddar cheese
o 1 C grated Monterey Jack cheese
o ½ medium onion
o 1 lb fresh mushrooms
o 1 can (28 oz) enchilada sauce
o 1 can (4 oz) sliced black olives
o 1 pkg large corn tortillas
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine grated cheeses together
in a bowl and set aside. Chop onion and mushrooms. In another
bowl, combine a third of the enchilada sauce, onion, mushrooms,
olives, and 1½ cups of cheese. Line the bottom of
a 9"x13" glass casserole dish with a layer of
tortillas dipped in a third of the enchilada sauce. Pour
mixture over tortillas, then top with another layer of tortillas
dipped in enchilada sauce. Pour any remaining sauce over
top. Bake for 20 minutes. Sprinkle the remaining half cup
of cheese on top. Bake for 5 more minutes. Slice and serve.
For 25 years, Tim played infield and coached third base
for the San Diego Padres championship major league baseball
team; he's played and coached in two World Series and an
All-Star game. Tim also did broadcasting for the Padres.
He next headed north to the San Francisco Giants team, joining
them as their third base coach. In spite of his heavy baseball
schedule, Tim pursued his musical life. Music from the foothills
of the Kentucky coal mines are deeply embedded in Tim's
roots. He probably had a guitar in his hand before a baseball
glove. Harmonies, melodies and lyrics course through his
veins like a tornado marking its path. Tim's latest album,
released in 2007, is called The Wayward Wind. Tim's critically-acclaimed
Pieces of the Past (Whale Bone Records) is a roots album
honoring his Irish-Kentucky-Cherokee heritage; it came about
when Tim's father fell victim to Alzheimers disease. Jackson
Browne, Bruce Hornsby, Darryl Johnson and Steve Poltz sang
on Pieces of the Past, and the album was produced by Irish
singer/songwriter Matt Manning, Mick Hanly wrote a song
for the project, and P.J. Curtis produced two tracks. His
2001 release, Highway Song, produced by Jeff Berkley, highlighted
Tim's advances as a songwriter. He continues to explore
the range of possibilities that life, music, and songwriting
make possible on his next release, Kentucky Towns. Inspired
by the discovery of his father's Bible, Tim was thrown back
to a time and place that re-connected him to his childhood.
Of Ring Around the Sun, Tim and his friends perform many
sell-out concerts, and he has also opened shows for Jimmy
Buffett, George Thorogood, Willie Nelson, Richie Havens,
Merle Haggard, and Judy Collins, among others. Tim's records
have been released in Ireland, and he has been nominated
for music awards. He continues to tour and perform his music
all over the country. His ninth record in 14 years, Traveling
Shoes, is set to be released in the fall of 2009 on Whalebone
Records. Tim dons his baseball cleats and returns again
this baseball season to coach 3rd base for the Giants. He
continues to follow those gypsy winds he writes about and
draws from the experience of the game he loves. Shifting
winds, daily doses of living, America's pastime; Tim Flannery
relies on the constant unpredictability of weather, life,
baseball and music to write his stories and sing his songs
that flow from the core of his being. Web site: www.timflannery.com
