Who Is Susun Weed?

Susun S. Weed has no official diplomas of any kind; she left high school in her junior year to pursue studies in mathematics and artificial intelligence at UCLA and she left college in her junior year to pursue life. Ms. Weed began studying herbal medicine in 1965 when she was living in Manhattan while pregnant with her daughter, Justine Adelaide Swede.

She wrote her first book – Wise Woman Herbal for the ChildbearingYear (now in its 29th printing) – in 1985; it was published by Ash Tree Publishing in 1986. It was followed by Healing Wise (1989), New Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way (1992 and revised in 2002), Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way (1996), and Down There, Sexual and Reproductive Health the Wise Woman Way (2011).

In addition to her writing, Ms Weed trains apprentices, oversees the work of more than 1300 correspondence course students, coordinates the activities of the Wise Woman Center, and is a High Priestess of Dianic Wicca, a member of the Sisterhood of the Shields, and a Peace Elder. Susun Weed is a contributor to the Routledge International Encyclopedia of Women's Studies, peer- reviewed journals, and popular magazines, including a regular column in Sagewoman. Her worldwide teaching schedule encompasses herbal medicine, ethnobotany, pharmacognosy, psychology of healing, ecoherbalism, nutrition, and women's health issues and her venues include medical schools, hospital wellness centers, breast cancer centers, midwifery schools, naturopathic colleges, and shamanic training centers, as well as many conferences.

Since she began studying herbal medicine more than forty-five years ago, Weed has garnered an international reputation for her groundbreaking lectures, teachings, and writings on health and nutrition, which frequently challenge conventional medical approaches and are unabashedly pro-woman. For example, for more than a decade she has been an outspoken voice warning about the dangers of hormone replacement therapy. The scientific community has only documented HRT's
connection to breast cancer and heart attacks. A powerful advocate for integrative medicine, Weed has appeared on numerous national radio, television, and new-media venues, including National Public Radio, NBC News, CNN, and
ABCNews.com. She has been quoted and interviewed in many major magazines, including Natural Health, Woman's Day, First for Women, and Herbs for Health. She is a contributor to the Routledge International Encyclopedia of Women's Studies, and writes a regular column in Sagewoman. Susun offers a monthly e-mail newsletter and maintains five information-rich websites.

Known for her voracious intellectual appetite, encyclopedic knowledge, and phenomenal energy, Weed maintains a farmstead with dairy goats, reads about a hundred periodicals a month, trains shamanic herbal apprentices, oversees the work of more than fourteen hundred correspondence course students, and has started to offer on-line courses as well. Ms. Weed also coordinates the activities of the Wise Woman Center, based in Woodstock, New York, an educational center that hosts such teachers as Vicki Noble, Z Budapest, Merlin Stone, Brooke Medicine Eagle, Luisa Teisch and many others.

Learn to Embrace this Quiet Understanding

Regardless of the assertion of any fearful state that seeks to convince you otherwise, apply this one great truth:
That fear must break down if it doesn't succeed in breaking down your willingness to test its reality. How do you conduct such a test? You learn to look at its presence within you with the quiet understanding that, in reality, nothing in life is fixed. All things change. Everything passes. This is truth. Knowing this to be true is power over fearful states that hold us captive.

On the other hand, according to another great truth, everything in life tends to become more of what it is, so that the only thing "fixed" in us are those parts of our presently unenlightened nature that convince us to resist life's natural changes. As this fear-filled, downward-trending nature tricks us into accepting its conclusions, they become the same as our captivity. We unconsciously accept the limited and painful life this alliance-in-the-dark produces.

Bit by bit we come to accept what we see as the inevitability of our unhappy, captive condition. And should we hear from a still, small, free part of ourselves, "Try once more, you don't belong there in that cell of yourself," from within us rises a chorus of negative voices to drown it out -- a choir constructed from our own past experiences that sings out, "There's no use." So we go to sleep within ourselves, preferring to dream of better times or in the imagining of what we will never know outside of our fitful reveries.

We can do better! We can awaken from not only the unsatisfying dream-life into which we've slipped, but from the unconscious dream-self that would have us remain there as captives of the lies it weaves.
There is no condition that can hold you captive without your unconscious cooperation. Withdraw it. Wake up! Walk out of yourself by changing how you see what you call your life. Realize that while the contents of your life may come and go, turn dark, or suddenly seem delightful, regardless, these things will pass. Resting in the awareness of this Truth while working to stand upon its higher ground, you come upon the Life within you whose nature is the unchanging witness of these movements.

- 10 raw almonds a day
- Steamed distilled or spring water (no tap water)
- Fruit juices in the AM
- Vegetable juices in the PM
- Only organic/hormone free meat and dairy products because other types contain residue of estrogenic hormones that have been linked to promoting breast cancer

Recipe of the Month


Lemon Molasses Cupcakes

Oven Temperature: 350° F
Baking Time: 30 min., 2-Muffin Tins
Preparation: Grease Muffin Tins.

2 cups flour blend (page )
1 1/2 teaspoons of xantham gum
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter (room temperature)
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup molasses
1 egg, well beaten (room temperature)
1/2 cup rice milk
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel

Sift together flour blend, xantham gum, baking powder, baking sods, salt and cinnamon.
Cream butter with maple syrup using electric mixer on low-medium speed until well blended. Add egg and blend well.
Add molasses and blend well at medium to high speed of electric mixer.
Keeping the electric mixer at medium-high speed alternately add flour mixture and rice milk to creamed butter-maple syrup mixture, mixing well after each addition.
Blend in lemon extract and lemon peel.
Fill muffin tins 2/3 full. Place in oven and bake at 350° F for 30 min.
Cool cupcakes for 5 minutes in muffin tins. Then remove and completely cool on wire rack before frosting with your favorite frosting or eat them plain!
Makes about 18 cupcakes.
