How Self-Command Gives Rise to Compassion

Even though we all know the harm it does to lash out at others, to launch an angry attack or act with cruel intent, we still tend to do these things anyway. The following insights help make clear why this happens to us and how we are made, in effect, to act against ourselves and others without really knowing why.

Whenever we are threatened in some way, our tendency is to go into an "auto-respond" mode of behavior; certain habitual reactions rise up and effectively "take over" our thoughts and feelings. So, in a manner of speaking, it isn't really our true Self that meets these unwanted events. If we take a step back and quietly observe ourselves through impartial eyes, here's what we'll see is actually happening within us: We are being told how we feel, what to do, even who we should be by what we're being given to remember in these moments.

Whenever we act cruelly toward another, it's because something cruel "takes over and handles" the moment for us by doing what it remembers to do. In a manner of speaking, a state of cruelty imposes its rules on us, and makes of us what it will in the next moment. Much to our regret, we don't remember that any better solution exists until we have to deal with the grief that follows from having forfeited our freedom.

What's the solution to this kind of forgetfulness? First, without judging ourselves, we must acknowledge the truth of our present (psychological) situation; facts never lie. We are reacting to life's challenges from unconscious parts of ourselves that literally hand us a script and then direct us to play out a painful role. We are not meant to live like this-as real-time prisoners of our own pasts, captives of conditioning that serves nothing but its own continuity. Within us, awaiting our awakening to it, lives a level of Self that cannot forget what is right, bright, and true, any more than the sun can forget to shine each day.

Living within us dwells an order of being that knows, without thinking about it, what is authentically good for us and others. The problem isn't that this higher level of being-with its natural, calm command-is actually missing just when we need it most. The real problem is that we forget it! We forget that it's our right to remember what we want to remember, instead of what we are being given to remember!

A higher spiritual choice exists in each and every moment-if we choose to be present to it. We do not need to think in order to know the right thing to do in the moment for ourselves, or for others! The awareness of our living relationship with the present moment-our willingness to consciously practice its presence-empowers us to know what's best for us without having to think about it.

This level of awareness sees what is real and what is not. Its power to command challenging moments derives from its complete innocence. Higher consciousness doesn't "try" to control events or other people, because its timeless nature is already a partner in guiding creation itself, so what has it to fear? And the more we place ourselves in the presence of this indwelling light, the more we will see small miracles take place before our very eyes. Quiet command over all that unfolds becomes as effortless for us as it is for the spreading light of dawn to chase away morning shadows.

When we are in command of our life, conflicts of one nature or another may appear, but we can no longer be tricked into compromising ourselves by mistaking, for instance, resentment or anger for real strength, or brash arrogance for quiet confidence. When we're in command of ourselves, we don't say cruel things to others.

Remember… in spite of the highly polished performances to make you believe otherwise -- everyone you meet suffers in much the same way as you do. No one wants others to know the weight of their unspoken pain. And yet, all are burdened with broken dreams, shattered hearts, and whatever other sorrow walks with them through their day.

Have the courage to act on this knowledge: Refuse to ever again add to the pain of another, even a small measure of your own. Whatever suffering you agree to shoulder in this way not only helps to lighten the load of those in need, but also serves to awaken within you the strength you need to be a real "friend in deed." Your reward: the birth of a whole new kind of compassion that not only flowers when faced with the weakness of others, but whose fragrance helps heal all those who are touched by it.

Every month we talk to one of our great show hosts. This month we are talking with Dr. Theresa Nicassio. Dr. Nicassio is a holistic health professional, Psychologist, chef, author, speaker, columnist and kindness advocate.

HL: At this time what is your purpose in life and what lead you there?

I feel called to help others find hope, empowerment and compassion, especially in the current climate of melting ice caps, species extinction, political unrest, increasing incidence of food allergies, autoimmune conditions, cancer, obesity and diabetes. Basically, I believe in the power of community and love to move mountains and am not afraid to dream what others might believe to be "an impossible dream." In my heart I know that together we can make the world a kinder and more sustainable place and feel called to do my part by being the "wind beneath the wings" of others to support them in their efforts to make a difference.

HL: What in your perspective is an everyday hero?

I believe that to choose to be alive each day is alone a heroic act. Because of this, at a core level we are ALL heroes, but sometimes just don't know it and can forget to stay awake and engaged for the adventure. Complacency is the hero's greatest saboteur.
Life can be challenging and each of us is offered the opportunity to grow and harvest the wisdom that the journey teaches us. On my show, I celebrate all heroes, from those who are doing beautiful service for the world in a quiet way, perhaps with their children or their home organic garden, as well as the most internationally renowned leaders in their field, who are courageously shaking up outmoded practices and beliefs with their insights, research and other discoveries, such as around health and the environment, even when the information they are sharing is not in alignment with conventional beliefs and practices. Every voice matters, every action matters. Collectively we are an ocean. When we intentionally choose to work in harmony and each generously shares our own unique gifts, we can transform even a cacophony into beautiful music.

HL: As a Raw Food Chef is it difficult to prepare Raw Food?

What surprises most people is that preparing raw food is actually far easier and often takes less time than preparing cooked food. The hardest part of making any dietary change is the decision to step out of your comfort zone of habituated unconscious living into the new realm of possibility thinking. Most people are already eating "raw food" on a regular basis, but don't think about it that way. Every fresh green salad or piece of fresh fruit---that's "raw food!" As a Gourmet Raw Food Chef, I have learned other exciting ways to mix it up to make insanely yummy food, but that is still just as easy to make. I love sharing these tips and recipes with others and particularly enjoy their amazement when they discover how simple and delicious it is to do. When I tell them how easy it is, they often don't believe me, thinking I'm just saying that because I am a chef. However, when I SHOW them or they actually try it themselves, that's when they really get it.

HL: What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Perfect happiness is when we are able to relish in gratitude for the gift of life itself, fully embracing and accepting the inherent imperfections within ourselves, others and world around us. Such an openhearted mindset frees us from the tyranny of "shoulds" and other expectations that rob us of joy and seduce us into the belief that we are victims.

HL: What do you like to do to relax?

Allowing myself to be enveloped in love from nature, beauty, music, friends and family, animals, and pensive reflection are some of my favourite ways to relax. However, I've also found that simply shifting my mindset to that place of childlike wonder and awe at life, even in the midst of chaos, is another way that has been very helpful in times when the moving parts about me are pretty intense. Parenting is a great example of this. Singing, dancing, gardening and crafting are also activities that take me on a journey to that place of blissful joy and ease.

HL: As a Nutritional Consultant what is a tip you can give us?

Listen to the wisdom of YOUR body. When you learn to LISTEN to what Serves YOUR BODY, YOUR BODY will Serve YOU. You will have more energy and sexual vitality, less pain, more mental clarity, less anxiety and depression, less inflammation, infection and disease, and will likely even extend your lifespan.

HL: What types of things do you cover on your radio show?

The Dr.Theresa Nicassio Show is a vehicle for social, emotional and environmental change, where any topic that empowers, educates and inspires the body, mind and soul is fair game. Health and healing, psychology, conscious living, art and music, sustainability, parenting, overcoming social and political limitations, as well as courageously living through tragedies and transcending obstacles are examples of the types of material we talk about on the show. For each program I invite guests to join me in heartfelt conversation about their passion, possibility thinking and life tips that have emerged from their own personal journey related to their topic. Each show ends with a segment called "Because You Asked" where listeners' questions are answered, either by me alone or along with one of my guests, when the question is relevant to their expertise.

Secret 1: Think of Your Business as a Service and Overcome Negative Obstacles

The 3 Keys:

  1. COMMITMENT - means you truly believe in your goal and what you are doing. You've done the planning, organizing, directing, implementing, supervising and controlling. You totally feel, know and trust your commitment to your business. You have the dedication to do what it takes no matter what. Focus on your commitment and then take action. If you're not committed and FOCUSED on your business, then find something else to do. You're wasting your most precious commodity which is - time.
  2. PERSEVERANCE - When something negative gets in your way, find a way over, around or through it. Don't give up or make excuses. Don't use negative words (I can't, I shouldn't, I wouldn't) change them to positive ones (I can, I shall, I would). Persistence and Perseverance WILL make your business a success. More businesses are successful because of persistence than money or magic.
  3. OVERCOME FEAR - Make fear your friend and see what it is trying to teach you and learn its lessons. The only way to get over fear is to acknowledge it and walk through it.

Secret 2: Success = GOOD Business Ethics

  1. TRUTH - You know what that is. That inner voice that nags you until you accept it. When you follow truth you can't make a mistake. If you don't the lesson truth is trying to teach you will be repeated over and over and over again until you get it right. People feel and recognize truth. For a long term, successful conscious business - use it.
  2. INTEGRITY - The dictionary says that the meaning of integrity is:
    The quality or state of being
    - of sound moral principle
    - uprightness
    - honesty and sincerity

Recipe of the Month

No Cook MacChocolate


6 Tablespoons Almond Butter (or Peanut Butter or Cashew Butter)
3 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
3 Tablespoons Honey
2 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder (unsweetened) or raw cacao
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Pinch Sea Salt
1/2 Cup Almonds (or Cashews) crushed. (place in plastic bag and crush with rolling pin)

Place All Ingredients (except for Cashew Pieces) into a medium size bowl and stir until mixed well and looks deliciously chocolaty. Stir in Cashews. Place plastic wrap into a loaf pan. Spoon in chocolate and even it out on the bottom. Place in fridge to set. Best to let it set for 24 hours. Then slice it up. Store in the Refrigerator because it will melt at room temperature.

FEBRUARY - Change and Love

Love, amongst many other things, is soft, passionate, giving, compassionate and limitless. It is the only thing we take with us when we pass over. However, let us also remember that love is also the strongest weapon of all. In this month of what seems like chaotic, unbelievable times let us remember to send love to all the things that seem to be unjust or out of kilter. Do not hang on to negative emotions. They are there to bring Light to the issues but, to make a real difference, see the situations in the Light of the positive. Figure oiut what can you do on an individual level, in a loving way, to help the situation. There is always something you can do, even if it is just sending the Light of Love to the source of the problem. We must all come together and use the power of Love so we can get this earth back in balance for the greater good of all. So put your Love warrior hat on and be part of the solution and not the problem.
