FEATURE ARTICLE
Grow Old Along with Me
the Best is Yet to Be

by Bernie Siegel, MD

Radio Hosts of:
"Mind Health Matters"
9am 1st Tuesday Every Month

My advice for aging is actually the opposite of the title of this article. I say grow young along with me because though I know there are benefits which come with aging I want to preserve my body and my health and keep them from aging and enjoy the present moment. I always remember the words of George Halas, the owner of the Chicago Bears football team. When he was well into his eighties a friend found him in his office on Sunday, and asked him why, at his age, he was working on a Sunday. His response, "It's only work if there's someplace else you'd rather be."
Just stop and think about that for a moment. How can you age if you never know what time it is? I know from experience and as a physician that the healthiest state one can be in is when you are doing something which makes you lose track of time. When I am painting a portrait or operating upon someone I have no sense of time or self. I am in a trance state and I believe when we are being creative our physiology gives our body a profound live message. The sad part is too many people wait until they are told they have a limited amount of time before they start living their chocolate ice cream.
That expression comes from one of our children who, when I asked him what he would do if he had fifteen minutes left to live, said, "I'd buy a quart of chocolate ice cream and eat it." What I had to learn is that we each have our own flavor and brand of chocolate ice cream. I have letters from people who moved, took off their tie, took violin lessons and did all the things they wanted to do before they died. So they were not denying their mortality just enjoying their life time; their letters often end with, "I didn't die and now I am so busy I am killing myself. Help, where do I go from here?" I tell them to take a nap because they are burning up and not out.
Now let me share some of the things I have learned from ninety year olds. One I shall never forget is a woman who, in her nineties developed breast cancer and gall stones. She was quite upset with God for doing this to her at her age but accepted the surgery and moved on in her life. I asked her to join our cancer support group because I knew she had lessons to teach us about survival behavior. One day when everyone in the group was caught up in their fears and what problems the future held I turned to her for help and asked, "What are you afraid of?" After several minutes of silence she sat up and said, "Oh I know; driving on the parkway at night." That resolved everyone's issue as we went from fear to laughter.
I loved it when I asked my mother what advice she had for seniors that I was going to lecture to. She said, "Tell them to lie a lot." I asked how that would help and she said, "If you tell people how you really feel they'll put you in a nursing home. So lie about it."
To survive we all need to have a sense of meaning in our lives, and express our emotions, including anger, when we are not treated with respect. Make our own therapeutic choices, ask for help when we need it, respond to our feelings when making choices, maintain an authentic life not just a role and say no to what we do not want to do. Basically we need to find our way of expressing our love while keeping a childlike sense of humor.
Let me close with two simple techniques for knowing what the aged are thinking without having to verbalize things they do not want to share. One is to ask, "How would you feel if placed in a totally white room?" and "What is your favorite animal and why?"
When a senior is tired of living or physically exhausted the white room is a spiritual sanctuary they are happy to be in because there is no stimulation and they can rest there.
The description of one's favorite animal is always related to one's feeling about one's self. So an active meaningful description also speaks about the same thing in that person's life and self. When there is no animal, life or energy in their choice they are ready to move on to become dreamless, unalive and perfect again.
So grow young along with me. The best is presently. I have learned from Helen Keller that, "Deafness is darker by far than blindness." So when in doubt about how to help a senior, listen, listen, listen and only say, "Ummm" in several ways. By your listening they will get to know themselves and their needs and then you will receive credit for being an enormous help. I know from experience.

While some people may see November as a darker, more melancholy time of year--and it is indeed splendid for meditation and introspection--I like to view it also in this perspective. The 30 days of November present us with a magnificent opportunity to raise as many candles as possible to spread brilliant light of faith and hope. Instead of looking at what isn't, we get a much clearer picture of and appreciation for what is and what can be.
Light a huge flame of celebration for a year well done. Open a radiant path for the exciting new year that's about to enter. Anticipate good things coming. November's darkness gives us an ideal backdrop for this and more. It's all in how you view it; yin and yang November offers the best of two worlds.
Serving as a primary candle to the Internet radio listener world--sparking creativity, awareness, and optimism, among numerous other things--HealthyLife.Net walks in great faith and hope itself. In doing so, it has once again proven that if you help light the way for others, your own path will be illuminated in the process. Everyone and everything - from listeners to our station to Mother Earth - shines evermore.
May your holiday season be bright.

Until next time…

November
HOST OF THE MONTH:

Flora Stay, D.D.S.
of  "Secret Gateway to Health"
3rd Wed. every Month, 9 am PT

Each month we focus on one of our hosts, and this month we are talking to Dr. Flora Stay who is a dentist, author, researcher and leader in the wellness movement for over 20 years.

HL- Paint us a picture of what Flora Stay is about?
My father was a botanist who used to go on expeditions discovering medicinal plants. I grew up hearing a favorite saying that he would often say to us: "Life is beautiful". I agree with my father, but no matter how beautiful you are, how much money you have, how famous you are - if you don't have health, life may not be so beautiful. There are many health gurus, but most if not all, ignore a very important organ that has major implications towards health. My passion is to help educate people on the importance of taking responsibility towards their own health through this organ, we call the mouth, which has connections to our general health. To me, the mouth is the gateway to health
HL-You are the founder of Cleure, what inspired Cleure?
My inspiration was alarming facts about ingredients in toothpaste. Our skin is the largest organ in our body. Through the skin and the mouth we can absorb many drugs and other substances right into the blood stream. People often buy products based on label claims, pretty packages and models or other well known spokespeople urging them to buy. Reports indicate an alarming increase in cases of breast cancer, chronic illness, and allergies. Toxins absorbed through our skin and mouth (toothpaste, mouthwash) could be one of the reasons for this increase. At Cleure, our mission is to provide clean and pure products that are safe. My brother the cancer specialist, totally agrees with me, that toxic ingredients can contribute to the rise of chronic illness and cancer.
HL-What should consumers look for in choosing safe and effective personal care and cosmetic products?
Consumers need to become educated on how to shop. How do you separate misleading ads that tell you what's in the jar will make you ten years younger, from the fact that the ingredients in the jar have not been assessed for safety by the FDA and can actually cause health problems? Or the tube of toothpaste that is purple and tastes like bubblegum for your kids, which has a warning on the back to keep out of reach of children under the age of six? My radio program, book and website which includes a free e-book "Product Labels: a Cautionary Tale" help consumers sift through the sea of products.
HL- What are some of the dangerous chemicals found in toothpaste and mouthwash?
The one ingredient in toothpaste that may cause many allergic responses and cause drying of the mouth tissues is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Two studies reported this and yet, because people are so used to this foaming agent, it continues to be used. Alcohol in mouthwash, saccharin, artificial colors and antibiotics are also commonly found in toothpaste and mouthwash which may be counterproductive to health in general.
HL- How and why is good dental hygiene/health so important?
We know now that gum disease increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, problem pregnancies, pancreatic cancer and other illnesses. Through a simple routine of oral hygiene and regular dental visits, this risk factor can be eliminated.
HL-What steps can someone take right now in starting on a path to better health?
A path to better health and well-being starts by knowing we can't depend on our doctor to fix us, but focusing on a wellness frame of reference. It starts by taking inventory of our lifestyle. We know better. Exercise is good, fruits and vegetables are good, moderation and portion control are good, safe every day products introduced to our body are good, and managing stress is good.
HL-If you could offer but one piece of advice or insight, what would that be?Life is beautiful, if you're healthy and able to enjoy it. Focus on wellness and know that every day matters
HL-On your HealthyLife.Net show what listeners hear? The show is called "Secret Gateway to Health". Since oral medicine touches so many aspects of health, including mind, body and spirit, the show will cover all these aspects as well. I'll have exciting guests as well as some shows with no guests. I welcome questions and requests that listeners can e-mail me with questions for future shows. It will be fun and offer a whole new perspective on health that people have never considered. From time to time, I will have contests where free products will be given away.
HL-
If you could give one key piece of advice or insight here, what would that be? Always take time to "tune in" to yourself and listen to what your intuition is telling you, in everything you do. I've always done this, and it literally saved my life once. But that's a story for another interview!

Spicy Whipped Sweet Potatoes
by Kitaro

o 2 large sweet potatoes
½ medium white potato
6 T maple syrup
½ C unsalted butter (at room temperature)
1 tsp chili powder
Cayenne (to taste)
1-2 tsp salt (to taste)
Peel and dice all the potatoes. In a saucepan, bring potatoes to boil in water. Reduce heat and simmer until soft. Drain and transfer potatoes to a food processor. Add maple syrup, salt, cayenne, and chili powder. Process 1 minutes while adding butter, a tablespoon at a time. Warm in pan and serve.

Kitaro: "This recipe was perfected on the '94 Mandala tour. I can't recall which city we were in, but at a meet-and-greet somewhere in the South, we were discussing different dishes, and we were joking around about the way they add chili pepper to everything. When I got back to my home in Colorado, one day I just added chili pepper to my sweet potatoes and this is what happened."

Kitaro is a multi-top award-winning (including Grammys and Golden Globe Awards) composer, arranger, producer, performer, multi-instrumentalist, and humanitarian. In addition to selling millions of albums worldwide, Kitaro has also contributed to many different types of creative projects, such as composing the score to Oliver Stone's Heaven and Earth, composing the critically acclaimed sound score to Cirque Ingenieux, composing for the Olympic Games in Atlanta, and performing at the closing ceremonies of the 1998 Winter Games, among many others.
