FEATURE ARTICLE
How to Win New Spiritual Strength
By Guy Finley
Radio Host:"Guy Finley Live "
2nd Tue every month, 9am PT

If we were to see someone trying to warm himself on a winter's night by snuggling up to a color photo of a fireplace, we would easily recognize this person as being deluded. We know that the glossy paper image which he clings to for life-sustaining heat is powerless to do anything but mock his obviously oblivious mind.
But this unfortunate man can't see the futility of his own misguided actions. Why? Because it's his own mind, his level of consciousness, that has confused a mere representation of reality for the fact of it. Mental pictures have no reality other than to that level of consciousness which creates them.
This exaggerated illustration -- of a man trying to warm himself with a photo of a fire -- hints to us of a common, and yet virtually undetected glitch in our own mental machinery. While you and I may not stand beneath a photo of a waterfall to get cool and wet, we do try to stand on images. And no image is permanent or real. Here's further proof.
We live with certain unspoken, but flattering mental pictures of ourselves. For instance, maybe we believe we're strong, the unafraid type. We may even have others in our lives who, because of their image of being too weak, look to us to tell them how to conduct their lives. As long as our self picture of being wise, strong, or kind remains intact, it only makes sense to us that these people are better off trying to mold their lives after ours. But then, as it always does, reality bursts our pleasing self picture. Pop goes our beautiful bubble!
Perhaps a bitter feud that's been long-brewing finally erupts in the home. Or there comes some unexpected bad news at the office. In a flash, we may find ourselves either trembling in the face of some shaky situation or fawning over some person of "power" -- a person who, coincidentally, we had only moments before been telling off from the safe and secret confines of our now fearful mind. Where did all of our strength go? It was never there!
All we ever possessed right up until the moment of that encounter with truth, with reality, was a pleasing picture of ourselves as being someone strong. Which leads us to: No image of being self-commanding possesses either the strength or confidence it sees itself as having.
When the images we have of ourselves as being strong collide with the facts that show our pleasing self pictures to be only touched-up phonies, these shocking experiences are not the proof that strength doesn't exist. We are never closer to being strong than when given the chance to see what is unreal about ourselves. Learning to welcome these healing moments -- of seeing what is false within us as being false -- is the same as welcoming a new kind of strength.

From the Editor's Desk

Creative Mamas rule, whether someone has biological children or not. However, if you do so happen to have kids, this can foster a whole new perspective on life and living. The weekly "get your green groove on" fusion of great global music, fun guests, and delicious vegetarian/vegan/raw food on "The Backstage Gourmet Radio Show" certainly pulls this all together for me each Monday, 1-2 p.m. PT. I invite you to join me.

Lisa Alther once said, "Any mother could perform the jobs of several air traffic controllers with ease." Yes, that would be Linda Mackenzie, a mother and grandmother, and founder of HealthyLife.net. Few can hold a candle to her when it comes to creatively crafting and pulling everything together to make things happen-yesterday. Pay heed, this is also a sure sign of a Creative Mama in action. Under the reigning banner "Creative Health & Spirit," Linda envisioned and gave birth to HealthyLife.net Radio Network as well as to a series of cutting-edge books, CDs, DVDs, and workshops.

Despite the risks and odds, she took on the male-dominated, doom-and-gloom-oriented radio industry to follow her dreams in providing positive and inspiring airwaves all around the world. Lending hope and lasting change, Linda and her network lights the way for millions near and far. For her efforts, she has been awarded, among other distinctions, the ABI Great Women of the 21st Century for Radio Broadcasting Award. Most recently, Linda further showed what a Creative Mama is all about in developing and launching positive talk news programming, which network listeners and advertisers love and a new car syndicated car show "Bobby Likis Car Clinic" where you can win tankfuls of gas and call in to 888-CAR-CLINIC during the show to find out answers as to why your car may be shaking, rattling and rolling. Linda also hosts "The Linda Mackenzie Show" on Tuesdays, 8-9 a.m. PT.

Linda Koss, host of "South Bay Woman" and publisher/editor-in-chief of South Bay Woman magazine in Southern California, also makes my Creative Mama honor roll. Caring, insightful, and motivating, Linda and her worthy mission include "strengthening the fabric of our community." Her empowering radio show and magazine are designed to encourage and inspire women. This month, South Bay Woman is presenting two excellent "Afternoon Tea and Speakers" programs (get more details here in our HealthyLife.net newsletter Events column). Offering encouraging information, advice, and guests, Linda's show airs on Fridays, noon to 1 p.m. PT.

I'll leave you with this one last thought. "I love my mother as the trees love water and sunshine-she helps me grow, prosper, and reach great heights," says Terri Guillemets. Sounds creatively just like HealthyLife.net.

See you next month.

HOST OF THE MONTH:

Dr. Jane Greer
of  "Doctor On Call"
Tuesdays, 11am Pacific Time

Each month we focus on one of our great hosts and this month we are talking to Dr. Jane Greer a 20-year nationally known therapist, author, feature writer and TV guest expert.

HL- What led you to become a psychotherapist? Starting in junior high school, I always loved talking with my friends and helping them work out boyfriend problems and anything else they were dealing with. As I got older, I discovered that helping people was a career choice and pursued it to acquire the skills to add to my innate love of finding solutions to difficulties and making life easier to deal with. It's a natural fit.
HL- What was your most fun TV interview as an expert? Actually, there were two really fun TV interviews. The first was years ago on "The Maury Povich Show" dealing with "Celebrities Dating After Divorce." In the green room, I met Louise Du Art, a comedienne and impressionist. We had great fun on the show and became fast friends for life. The other TV show I really enjoyed was when I was featured as a guest on "To Tell the Truth" as the Sex Columnist for Redbook magazine. The most fun was that I managed to fool everyone, the audience, and celebrity panel!
HL-What topics do you cover when you write for Cosmopolitan magazine? The topics I cover when contributing to the various woman's magazines, including Cosmopolitan, Allure, Self, Glamour, O, etc, all address dealing with relationships and how to cope better with them, including, marriage, sexual questions, infidelity and cheating, dating questions, financial concerns, parenting styles, and pretty much any and all relationship conflicts.
HL- How do you relax? The things I love to do to relax include reading thriller books, and magazines, doing yoga, listening to music, watching television, ballroom dancing, going to movies, going out to dinner, spending time with family and friends, shopping, traveling, and brushing my dog.
HL- When should someone seek a psychotherapist? Someone should seek help when your unhappiness with yourself, a relationship you're in, or a situation you're dealing with such as a job, friendship, family matter affects you on a regular basis and leaves you feeling, alone, misunderstood, angry, disappointed, helpless, and stuck. That's the point at which these negative feelings can become like quicksand and make it hard for you to find your way out of their hold. Professional and objective help will give you both the perspective and the tools you can use to regain control and change things for the better for yourself..
HL-What do you like to cover on your "Doctor on Call" radio show?
I love to talk with anyone who has some expertise in a given area that will be helpful to pass on to the listeners so that they can learn new information which they can then use to enhance their lives. Authors, doctors, comedians, educators, musicians, anyone who has a personal story to tell that will help others is welcome as a guest.
HL- How is your message universal?
We're so much more alike than different. We all want to feel good about ourselves, love and be loved, use our talents and be recognized for them, and ultimately to find meaning in life. My major in college was comparative religions, and I loved scribbling in the margins "I just read this same point in my Taoism class" or "This is also in the chapter on Judaism." These underlying truths that are in every spiritual tradition are what Aldous Huxley called The Perennial Philosophy. I think that the more we look at those underlying connectors, rather than at our differences, the better off we'll be.
HL- What can we expect on your future shows? More interesting, exciting, and entertaining guests covering a range of topics that all deal with enhancing your self esteem and being your best self possible, including exercise, diet, skin, care as well as coping with illness and death and overcoming adversity in living.
HL- What is your favorite word and why? My favorite word is fun. I love to have it; it's the best thing to share with everyone and anyone. I enjoy making each encounter fun, and making the difficult easier by turning challenges into fun.

HealthyLife Health Tip: On Road Rage

The cause of road rage can be found within four levels of stress (environmental, nutritional, emotional and physical) that affect how we, look, think and feel. Some possible factors... Environmental Stress: - too much traffic - inadequate lanes and highways - too many accidents - traffic jams.
- poisonous toxins emitted by cars (e.g., carbon monoxide and lead). People inhale these poisonous fumes on the road which affect the body and contributes to road rage.

Nutritional Stress - improper/inadequate nutrients which affect proper working of the mind and body. - poor diet which may cause nutrient deficiency - too much sugar, artificial colorings, preservatives, alcohol, caffeine, which may cause body imbalance and irritability.

Physical Stress - illness - backaches - headaches
- side effects of prescription, over the counter/recreational drugs that may have side effects of drowsiness which reduces alertness

Emotional Stress - negative emotions (e.g., frustration)
- absorbing bad driving behavior from movies and parents
- Increased stress in daily life.

Positive ways to handle road rage are:
- Use positive thought & action
- Remember people make mistakes. In human activity there is a 4-10% average chance of mistake.
- Practice safe driving
- Acquire a supportive driving philosophy
- Don't challenge aggressive drivers
- Avoid aggressive drivers and report them to your traffic authorities
- Be physically fit and able to drive
- Reduce the stress in your daily life with exercise, meditation, deep breathing, reading or hobbies
- Eat properly and get enough rest
- Take supportive vitamins, minerals, and nutrients
